Veterans Benefits

Post - 9/11 GI Bill

The University of Fairfax is pleased to accept Post - 9/11 GI Bill benefits for eligible students. Only active duty service performed after September 10, 2001 is considered for determining eligibility for this benefit. A veteran's level of eligibility is determined by his/her accrued length of service after September 10, 2001. Eligible veterans with less than 100% eligibility receive a pro-rated percentage of the maximum award. Award percentages range from 40% to 100%. To determine your eligibility visit the V.A. Who is Eligible?

Any veteran may apply for this benefit and may be eligible if:

  • You served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001 of at least 90 days
  • You were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and you served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001 or
  • You are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post - 9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran's service under the eligibility criteria listed above

How to Qualify?

To qualify for the Post - 9/11 GI Bill you must:

  • Submit an application for the Post - 9/11 GI Bill to the Department of Veterans Affairs here
  • Provide a certificate of eligibility to your Admissions Officer; and
  • Obtain admission to the University of Fairfax

Yellow Ribbon Program

The University of Fairfax is pleased to support qualified veterans through the Yellow Ribbon Program. The Yellow Ribbon Program is a voluntary agreement between Veterans Affairs and the University of Fairfax which enables eligible students to have 100% of their tuition and fees covered. These benefits are in effect only during the University's participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program and are subject to change. Any applicable fees not covered by this grant must be paid in accordance with the terms stated in the student's enrollment agreement.

Who is Eligible?

Only individuals entitled to the maximum Post - 9/11 GI Bill benefit rate (based on service requirements) are eligible for Yellow Ribbon funding.

How to Qualify?

To qualify for the Yellow Ribbon program you must:

  • Have served 36 months on active duty in the U.S. military after September 10, 2001, thus making you 100% eligible for the Post - 9/11 GI Bill.
  • Submit an application for the Post - 9/11 GI Bill to the Department of Veterans Affairs here
  • Provide a certificate of eligibility to your Admissions Officer; and
  • Obtain admission to the University of Fairfax
  • Remain enrolled or return as scheduled from a Leave of Absence. Should you lose eligibility for not maintaining continuous enrollment, any future grant benefit will be forfeited.

If you participated in the Montgomery GI Bill program, you can take advantage of these monthly benefit rates for full-time students:

CHAPTER 30: Active Duty/Veteran

  • Benefits for less than three years: $1,270/month
  • Benefits for three or more years: $1,564/month

CHAPTER 31: Disabled Veterans

The Department of Veterans Affairs pays the cost of tuition, books, and all fees directly to University of Fairfax. In addition, the veteran receives an allowance from the VA as follows:

CHAPTER 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill

The Post-9/11 GI Bill program is comprised of multiple payments. The maximum amounts listed on this page are applicable to individuals eligible for the full benefit (100% eligibility tier). If you are not eligible for the full benefit, the payment and maximum amounts will be prorated based on your eligibility percentage. Under the Post-9/11 GI Bill you may receive a:

  • Tuition & fee payment sent directly to the school up to $19,198.31
  • Monthly housing allowance sent to you
  • Books and supplies stipend sent to you
  • One-time rural benefit for certain veterans

CHAPTER 35: Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance

Individual benefit of $987/month for the spouse or dependent of a veteran who is permanently and totally disabled or whose death was service-connected.

CHAPTER 1606: Selected Reserves

Benefit: $356/month (and you may be eligible for a kicker)

CHAPTER 1607: Reservists Called to Active Duty

  • Two Years Service: $1,251.20/month
  • One Year Service: $983.40/month
  • 90 Days to One Year Service: $625.60/month

Blue Ribbon Grant

The Blue Ribbon Grant is designed to recognize and assist veterans, active duty military personnel, and other related individuals (spouses, dependents, etc.) by providing additional financial support to extend the impact of military educational benefits.

Eligibility: The University of Fairfax provides a grant of up to 25% of the total amount that is paid toward the direct cost of education on behalf of a qualified individual by the Veterans Administration under Chapter 30, 31, 35, 1606, 1607, and TA or other related program; the Department of Defense under any applicable educational support program; or any military service component or branch under any applicable educational support program (the “applicable veteran's benefits”). MyCAA recipients are not eligible to earn Blue Ribbon Grant.

Award: Eligible students may accumulate up to a maximum of $15,000 to use to extend their program of studies, complete their studies, or assist a qualified spouse or dependent at the University of Fairfax. The grant will be considered earned and payable toward the student's direct cost of education when all applicable military education benefits have expired, been exhausted, or when the military student, spouse, or dependent is otherwise no longer eligible to receive any such benefits.

Once earned, the accumulated grant amount may be utilized to pay tuition and fees at the University of Fairfax in the recipient's current program, or any new academic program or degree level. In addition, accumulated grant funds may be used to fund an external certification that is associated with the students program of study.

The military student, spouse, or dependent earning the grant may elect to transfer the earned grant to a current spouse or to a dependent under the age of 30. In the event of such transfer, the grant will be considered earned, transferable, and payable toward the transferee spouse or dependent's direct cost of education following the completion of any session in which eligible military student benefit funds are paid toward the transferor's direct cost of tuition and fees.

Fellowships

Cybersecurity Best Practices Fellowship

The University has established the CISSP Best Practices Fellowship to support and encourage cybersecurity professionals to obtain the CISSP certification. This Fellowship applies only to IC7000, the (ISC)2 Official CISSP Review Seminar taken as part of the CISSP Best Practices graduate certificate. Students must be in good academic standing and meet financial obligations to the University in order to receive the Fellowship.

Information Security Certification Fellowship

The University has established an Information Security Certification Fellowship Fund for degree-seeking applicants who hold selected, recognized information security certifications such as CISSP, CISM, and CISA. This Fellowship serves to encourage information security professionals to advance their careers in order to increase the security of public and private information systems. Only active certifications held prior to enrollment in a University of Fairfax degree program are eligible for consideration. Students must remain in good academic standing and meet financial obligations to the University in order to continue to receive Fellowship disbursements.

FISMA Fellowship

The University has established the FISMA Fellowship Fund to support research that is needed to improve FISMA compliance. Preference is given to individuals who demonstrate a capability and motivation to undertake FISMA compliance-related projects. FISMA Fellowship awards are based on merit and/or need. Students must remain in good academic standing and meet financial obligations to the University in order to continue to receive fellowship disbursements.

Cyber Policy Fellowship

To support and encourage cybersecurity professionals to address cybersecurity policy level challenges, the University has established the Cybersecurity Policy Tuition Fellowship. This fellowship is awarded to qualified and motivated students who wish to address cybersecurity challenges and advance their cybersecurity careers. Students must remain in good academic standing and meet financial obligations to the University in order to continue to receive disbursements each session towards their tuition.
